Train Drawing 2007. mixed media. 3'x 5' x 5'

Train Drawing is a composite record of a train ride on the Bay Area Rapid Transit System. The stacked printer paper is a long drawing that I made while riding the train. When I draw on the train I mark what I see in the window until I do not see it anymore. I then mark something else. Sometimes I get frustrated because I cannot mark down everything as it passes quickly. At other times I feel almost like I am matching the train motion for motion. In the gallery the drawing and the video are synched up by a program so that they portray the same time/space.

The video is silent so the only sound comes from the stepper motors and shuffling paper. At the end of the train ride the video rewinds/plays backwards at the same speed (the train moves in the opposite direction Right to Left.) The drawing also rewinds at the same speed. The piece goes on indefinitely shuttling back and forth.

This piece is a Chinese Landscape painting for the age of speed. My drawing style is dictated by the train, fast gestural when the train is at top speed and contour line for the station stops.
